There are lots of affiliate networks out there to choose from.

Pay-Per-Sale – This is the most common model in which you are paid only if there is a sale. If someone clicks on your affiliate link to visit the merchant’s site and buys something you will get paid. All merchants are different, but usually there is a time frame meaning if someone buys something from the merchant within 30 days of clicking on your affiliate link you will still get a commission.

Pay-Per-Lead – Pay per leads commissions are usually small, but don’t worry you can still make money on this one. With this one you want to get an email address from the visitor for example they sign up for a free trial. Every company will be different.

Pay-Per-Click – This one is extremely rare since it is exactly as it sounds every time someone clicks on your affiliate link you get paid. There is too much click fraud on the internet to make it profitable for the merchant.

It is important to know what kind of traffic is coming to your site to help with optimizing your site. Web analytics collect internet data to give you insight on your website traffic, and marketing effectiveness. There are a lot of different web analytics to choose from, but after doing the research I decided to try Google Analytics -http://www.google.com/analytics/

Find out what the top keywords users are searching to find your site, which page they are going to the most on your site. Create save and edit custom reports the way you want to see them. Your dashboard has everything you want to see in one shot.

Once you installed the tracking code onto your website you will be able to see data after 24 hours. To get you tracking code:

1.	Log into your account
2.	Select Analytics Settings on the top left side of the screen
3.	Select the profile you want to look up by clicking edit on the right side.
4.	On the top right it says Receiving Data (Check Status) Click on that
5.	Your tracking code can be copied and pasted

Link building is one of the top ways to bring your rank up with the search engines. Google is the leader when it comes to search engines. One of the algorithms Google uses in determining who will rank #1 is how many sites are linked to your site. Not just any ol’ site will do they need to come from an authoritative site. By that site linking to your site it builds trust, tells Google that both these websites are relative to one another. If the community likes your site and wants to link to it so will Google.

There are also directories you can submit your link to. Yahoo directories and Google directories offer free submissions. When linking to a directory you want to make sure your link is in the appropriate category for your niche. And make sure you are linking to a directory that has high ranks of its own.

The internet has become very community orientated. You want to become an expert in your field so everyone else will want to link to your.

This one had me confused for a bit. I have been reading up on the difference between broad match and phrase match, but wasn’t really grasping the difference. This is what I found out about keyword matching. These options help you determine who sees your ad. You can set you keywords to have one of these four settings:

1.	Broad match – keyword
2.	Phrase match – “keyword”
3.	Exact match – [keyword]
4.	Negative match –keyword

Broad Match – You simply enter your phrase into Google without any quotes or brackets around it. This is goggles default to add keywords. Google can look at the search term and add keywords around it, or if your keyword is apple pie, and someone searches pie apple or homemade apple pie your ad will still show up.

“Phrase Match” – This is the one that got me because it seems to be the exact same thing as exact match, but it’s not. For phrase match you write your keyword in quotes. The keywords in your phrase have to be exact, but Google can add other search terms around it. So if your keyword is “apple pie” and someone searches for homemade apple pie your search will show up, but if the search is on homemade pie apple your ad will not show up.

[Exact Match] – You write this keyword in brackets. Your ad will show up only if the search term is exactly the same as your keyword.

-Negative Match – This allows you to block your ad if certain keywords are being used in the search query. If you only want someone to look up apple pie you could add crisp to your negative words just to make sure your ad didn’t show up for apple crisp when a search query was done.

Well to get that price you have to sign up for 3 years. I signed up for the 9.95 month to month package. The order process was extremely easy. The only question that might confuse you -

It says:

1)	Register new domain or
2)	I will use my existing domain and update my name servers only.

So if you don’t have a domain name you will have to choose option 1 and register a new domain name. The prices when I looked them up were running around $15.00/yr. Now most companies offer two domain servers one main server and one for backup. Host Gator has six servers distributed around the U.S. which makes them very reliable. So I don’t think there is anything wrong with registering your domain through them.

Option 2 if you already have a domain name registered with GoDaddy or Dotster you will choose this option. Once you have gone through the registration process you will receive a welcome letter that lets you know what your new DNS will be. Simply log into GoDaddy or Dotster or whatever your registrar is and update your new DNS.

They need to bind the account with a domain name so you will have to choose either option number 1 or option number 2.

A great way to compare the volume of two or more search terms is by using Google trends. It is very simple tool to use go to Google Trends type in your first keyword for example go ahead and type in chocolate. You will see a graph that shows the average worldwide traffic for the word chocolate. It shows what regions the word is most popular in. Now go ahead and place a comma after chocolate and write your second keyword for example chocolate, candy it will compare the traffic between the two search terms. So you can see where your traffic is coming from and which term is used as a search more often.

The horizontal axis represents time, and the vertical is how often the term is being searched. You can dig even deeper and find out where in each country it is more popular. If you click on New Zealand under Regions on the bottom you will see a new graph showing the traffic for your keyword in New Zealand.

This information is useful when trying to find out which keywords you want to use, especially if you are writing an ad campaign you will know which area you want to target.

Now what about the end extension in a domain name! Most people using the internet will assume a domain name ends with the extension .com. while I think it is fine to purchase another extension like .net or .org. The price of a domain name is really quite inexpensive so you might want think about getting the same domain name with the .org and .net extensions. You might start doing great on your affiliate site, traffic is good, and life is good. Someone might come along and buy the .net and .org extension of that same domain name and take some of your hard earned traffic.

.com extension is the most popular and most widely used; represents the word “commercial.”
.net extension is mainly used by internet service providers; represents the word “network”
.org is usually used by non-profit; represents the word “organization”
.biz represents the word “business”
.info is considered a credible resource site; the word represents “resource”

.mobi = mobile
.us = American web sites
.cc = Coco’s Keeling Islands
.bz = Belize (sometimes if a small business might use this extension if they can’t get .biz)
.tv = media
.vg = British Virgin Islands
.ws = Western Samoa (but is sometimes used as an acronym for “web sites”)
.name = Personal use
.co.uk = United Kingdom

A lot of thought should be put into choosing the right domain name. It will make optimizing your site for search engines that much easier.

I have been researching domain names with hyphens – should we use them or not? I can’t find any major search engine with statements regarding they like or do not like the hyphens or dashes. Over the years spiders have become smarter, they are able to parse through words with or without hyphens to make sense of the word.

The only reason I can see why you wouldn’t want to use a hyphen in your domain name is the simple fact that it is hard to remember. When someone is trying to remember your domain name they might not remember exactly where to put the hyphen. If they put the hyphen in between the wrong words or just leave it out there is a possibility of ending up on your competitor’s site. So if you have a business card, or you are telling someone hey check out my site. Maybe a hyphen isn’t the best way to go for the simple fact they might not remember exactly where that hyphen goes.

Now if you are an affiliate marketer it seems to me your real target would be well anyone. So your main goal is to bring in as much traffic to your site as possible by really promoting your site. You want to end up on the first page preferably the number one spot of the search result for your particular niche. So in my opinion I don’t think it matters, but will do some more research on it.

Having a good page rank is a like a popularity contest with Google. One of the things Google considers when looking at your site is how many back links you have to your site. Some say that page rank is not as important as it use to be in ranking your website. Keywords and how many times you use relevant keywords, content, title and the URL are more important. I think it all matters if you are doing a good job with keywords and working on your back links page rank will follow. Here is a breakdown of what the page rank numbers mean:

Page rank 0-2 is any website that has just started out on the web.

Page rank 3-6 Proven sites that have good back links, most of these sites have been around for about 1 year.

Page rank 7-10 if you have this you can consider yourself a leader in that particular niche.

If you are using firefox as your browser you can utilize free firefox ad-ons.The one I use is SearchStatus this one has quite a bit of information. It displays pagerank on the bottom right of your screen, along with so many other tools that are just a click away. Keyword density, show whois, meta tags, link report, show backward links and more. This is a great tool to have for doing research. You can find serachstatus on the firefox website, just type in searchstatus download and install, takes just minutes to do.
